Let’s be honest — shaving stinks. Waxing isn’t much better. Ingrowns, razor burn, stubble five minutes after you shave — Charleston humidity is not forgiving. If you’ve been thinking about laser hair removal, you’re not alone.
At Soulshine Aesthetics in Mount Pleasant, we just brought in the Sciton OMNI Laser, and I can confidently say it’s the best device on the market right now. Safe, fast, more comfortable, and designed for all skin tones (just not freshly tanned skin — sorry beach lovers).
And because I know you’ve got questions, I pulled together this FAQ. Think of it as everything you’d ask me during a consult, all in one place.
Laser Hair Removal FAQ
Does laser hair removal really work?
Yes — and not “yes, but you’ll still need to shave every day.” Laser hair removal works by sending energy into the follicle to stop future growth. With OMNI, you’ll see a big reduction after just a couple of sessions, and by the end of your treatment series most hair in the treated area is gone.
Is laser hair removal permanent?
The word “permanent” gets thrown around a lot, but here’s the reality: laser hair removal means long-term reduction. Most clients see about 80–90% of hair gone for good. But — hormones, lifestyle, and genetics all play a role, so touch-ups may be needed. For example, pregnancy or perimenopause can wake up some sleepy follicles. Still, it’s way better than shaving every other day.
How many sessions will I need?
Most people need 6–8 sessions spaced 4–6 weeks apart. Here’s why: hair grows in cycles, and only about 20% of hairs are in the active growth phase at any given time. The laser can only target those, so each session gradually clears more.
You’ll notice thinner, slower regrowth after 2–3 sessions, but consistency is what gets you lasting results. Think of it like chipping away at the problem with every visit until smooth skin is your new normal.
Does it hurt?
Not gonna lie — you’ll feel something. Most people describe it as a quick “snap,” like a rubber band. Honestly, if you didn’t feel a little snap, I’d be worried the energy wasn’t high enough to actually kill that hair follicle. The goal
isn’t pain, but you should know the laser is working.
The good news: OMNI has advanced cooling and a gel-free spritz spray, which makes treatments surprisingly tolerable compared to older devices. Translation: no sticky gel mess and no “why did I do this?” regret.
Can I do laser hair removal if I have a tan?
This is where I have to be the bad guy — nope. We can’t treat freshly tanned or sunburned skin. It increases risks because the laser can’t distinguish as well between your skin pigment and your hair. That goes for spray tans and self-tanner, too. Plan ahead, avoid tanning or self tanner for 2 weeks before your appointment, and you’ll be good.
Is it safe for all skin tones?
Yes. Older lasers weren’t great for darker skin types, but OMNI uses three different wavelengths (760, 810/940, and 1060 nm) that allow us to safely treat both light and dark skin. That’s one of the main reasons I chose this device — inclusivity matters.
Best Hair Colors for Laser Hair Removal
Laser hair removal works best on dark, coarse hairs because the laser energy is absorbed by pigment in the follicle. Very light blonde, red, or gray hairs may respond minimally because there’s not enough pigment for the laser to “see.” We assess each client individually and may recommend alternative strategies if your hair color falls outside the ideal range.
What areas can be treated?
Almost anywhere you’ve got unwanted hair. We group treatments into zones:
-
Small zones: underarms, bikini line, upper lip, chin, neck under the beard
-
Medium zones: Brazilian, half legs, chest, multiple vascular areas
-
Large zones: full legs, full back, or more comprehensive vascular work
Pro tip: Guys love treating the neck under the beard — no more irritation, razor bumps, or that awkward low-neck stubble.

How should I prepare for my appointment?
-
Shave the treatment area about 24 hours before your session. For areas where hair grows a little slower, like the legs, up to 48 hours may be fine — but this can vary person to person.
-
Avoid tanning, spray tans, or self-tanner for at least 2 weeks before.
-
Don’t pluck, tweeze, or wax — we need the follicle intact for the laser to work.
-
Arrive with clean skin: no makeup, deodorant, lotions, perfumes, or oils on the area being treated.
-
Skip harsh skincare products (like strong retinoids or scrubs) right before treatment.
Basically: shave, keep it clean, and let us handle the rest.
What should I do between appointments?
The biggest rule: no plucking, waxing, or tweezing between sessions. That removes the follicle the laser is trying to disable. Shaving is absolutely fine (and expected), since it leaves the follicle in place.
What happens after treatment?
You might notice mild redness, like a light sunburn, that fades within a few hours. Most people go right back to work, errands, or whatever’s on the to-do list. Just wear SPF if the area will be exposed — Charleston sun is no joke.
Over the course of the next week, you’ll also notice shedding of the treated hairs. That’s totally normal — it’s the body pushing out the “dead” follicles that were disabled by the laser. Don’t wax, pluck, or tweeze them; just let them fall out naturally.
When will I see results?
After your first couple of sessions, you’ll see thinner, slower regrowth. By the end of your series, most hair in the treated area is gone. Maintenance looks a little different for everyone, but once you’re through your initial sessions, upkeep is minimal.
How Much Does Laser Hair Removal Cost?
Pricing depends on the size of the area being treated. At Soulshine Aesthetics, small areas start at $250 per session, while medium and large zones range from $500–$675 per session depending on coverage (think full legs or full back). We keep it simple with clear package pricing by area — small, medium, or large — so you only pay for what you need and can easily plan your series.
Launch Special: For a limited time, when you buy a medium or large area package, you’ll get a small area free. Now you don’t have to choose between smooth underarms or a bikini line — you can treat both.
