The Laser Prep Protocol
Dark spots are not one simple problem. And better laser results do not begin on laser day.
The Countdown combines an ExoFirm facial with a prescribed brightening and barrier routine. Together they correct summer pigmentation, calm visible inflammation, restore hydration, and prepare your skin for fall treatments.
Standard Protocol $425 | Extended Protocol $575
Quick Answer
How do you prep your skin for laser? Start four to six weeks out. Use a brightener that slows pigment at the source, like alpha arbutin or kojic acid. Add a niacinamide moisturizer to stop pigment from spreading and to rebuild your barrier. Wear sunscreen every day. Stop all exfoliating products seven days before treatment. The Laser Prep Protocol is a laser prep facial and prescribed home regimen at Soulshine Aesthetics in Mount Pleasant, SC that does all four.
You booked the laser. You are excited. And a little nervous.
You have heard the stories. Someone treated their dark spots and they came back darker. Someone stayed red for weeks. Someone spent real money and saw very little change.
Here is what nobody tells you. Your laser result is mostly decided before you sit in the chair.
The Laser Prep Protocol is a laser prep facial and home care regimen that gets your skin ready. Two in-office treatments. A prescribed routine. One printed card so you always know what to do tonight.
You walk in prepared instead of hopeful.
This Is For You If:
-
You are booked for laser this fall, or thinking about it.
-
You have melasma, sun damage, or post-acne marks that never fully faded.
-
You have had pigment come back darker after a treatment before.
-
You want a plan, not another jar of cream.

You Are Not Waiting. You Are Treating.
The weeks before your laser are not a holding pattern. They are treatment.
You get two facials. Your tone starts evening out. Your barrier gets stronger. Most people see a difference by week two or three, well before laser day.
Your skin should already look better when you walk in. That is the point.
Why Prep Matters
Not all lasers do the same thing.
Some target pigment directly. The energy finds the dark spot, breaks it apart, and your body carries it away. Others target the water in your skin, removing the surface layer so fresh skin grows in behind it.
Different targets. Same two side effects.
Heat. Every laser delivers it, and your skin reads heat as an injury. It answers with inflammation, and inflammation tells your pigment cells to get to work. If those cells were already busy going in, they can respond by making more pigment instead of less.
That is post-inflammatory hyperpigmentation. It is why some people leave a laser appointment happy and end up darker three weeks later. Melasma is the most reactive of all, because it responds to heat as much as to light.
A wounded barrier. Resurfacing lasers remove skin on purpose. That is the treatment working. But your barrier then does hard repair work for days, and it repairs better when it was strong to begin with.
Prep works on both problems at once.
Calmer pigment cells, so there is less for the inflammation to stir up. A stronger barrier, so your skin heals faster and cleaner.
That is true no matter which laser you are booked for. Same prep, every time.
When Should You Laser?
We treat year round. The question is not whether your skin can handle laser in July. It is whether your summer can.
Afterward your skin is light-sensitive for a few weeks, which means real sun avoidance. Shade, hats, staying off the boat. Some people can do that in July. Between Sullivan’s Island, travel, and kids out of school, most of our clients cannot.
October through March is the window most people can actually keep. Not because the laser works better in cooler months, but because you can follow the instructions.
Lasering this summer anyway? Then prep matters more, not less. Skin coming off a Lowcountry summer has more active pigment going in. Tell us your date and your plans and we will build around them.
Then count back. Two to four weeks for most people, six if we are building from scratch.
We build the plan around your calendar, not the other way around. Start any week you like.
The Full Protocol, Week by Week
Weeks To Your Best Results
6 Weeks Out — Condition
You come in for your first ExoFirm facial. We exfoliate, oxygenate, and flood the skin with plant-derived exosomes and peptides. You leave glowing.
At home you start The Daily every night. Sunscreen every single morning, no exceptions.
5 Weeks Out — Introduce
Pads every other night, starting two to three days after your facial. The Daily morning and night.
Some tingling is normal. Burning is not. Text us if you are unsure.
4 Weeks Out — Build
Pads nightly if your skin is handling them well. Otherwise stay every other night.
This is the week your skin starts looking clearer. Keep going.
3 Weeks Out — Treat
Your second ExoFirm facial. Pause the pads for two to three days afterward, then pick right back up where you left off.
We also book your laser date at this visit.
2 Weeks Out — Peak
Pads nightly. The Daily morning and night. Sunscreen without fail.
This is your strongest week. No new products, no new treatments.
1 Week Out — Quiet
Pads stop three to five days before your laser. Keep using The Daily morning and night, and keep using sunscreen.
Laser Day
You arrive calm, hydrated, and prepped. This is what we have been building toward.
After
Follow the post-care instructions your Soulshine provider gives you. Recovery looks different depending on your laser type, the intensity we treated at, and how your skin responds.
For most people, The Daily or Neocutis Aftercare comes back first. The pads wait until your provider clears you. We will tell you when, and we will put it in writing before you leave.
One Optional Upgrade
If you want to push results further, add a vitamin C serum in the morning, under The Daily and sunscreen.
Vitamin C works differently than the pads. It is a mild pigment inhibitor on its own, but its bigger job is antioxidant defense. It neutralizes the free radicals that sun exposure creates, and those free radicals are part of what tells your pigment cells to work harder.
So the pads slow production at night. Vitamin C reduces the daytime signal that starts the process over.
Ask your provider which vitamin C is right for you. It depends on how your skin handles actives and what else you are already using, so we will match it to you rather than sending you to a shelf.

Provider Check-Ins and Treatment Planning
We review how your skin is responding and help determine whether your next step should be Moxi, Pico, IPL, a peel, resurfacing, or continued skin care.
How the Facial Works
Most facials work on the surface. This one gets your own body involved.
It exfoliates. A gentle mechanical pass clears the dull top layer. No suction, no abrasion, nothing aggressive.
It oxygenates from within. The pod releases carbon dioxide bubbles at the skin surface. Your body reads that signal and sends oxygen-rich blood up to meet it. This is a real physiological response called the Bohr effect. We are not spraying oxygen on your face. We are asking your circulation to deliver it.
It infuses. That same moment of increased blood flow and cleared surface is when the actives go in. Exosomes, peptides, copper, and hyaluronic acid, all activated fresh on your skin.
The platform behind this treatment has been evaluated in peer-reviewed clinical literature. It is gentle enough for sensitive and reactive skin, and safe for all skin tones.
The Ingredient Spotlight
Pigment is not one problem. It is a supply chain. You have to interrupt it in more than one place.
Slow the production. The Brightening Pads use alpha arbutin and kojic acid. Your skin makes pigment with an enzyme called tyrosinase. These two slow that enzyme down, so less pigment gets made in the first place. Gentle acids clear the dull surface layer so they can reach it.
Stop the spread. The Daily uses 4% niacinamide. Pigment gets made in one cell, then handed off to the cells around it. That handoff is what you see as a dark spot. Niacinamide interrupts it. That is a different step than what the pads are doing, which is why you use both.
Rebuild the barrier. The Daily also carries ceramides, cholesterol, and phytosphingosine. Those are the fats your skin barrier is actually built from. We are putting back what summer stripped out. Strong skin heals cleaner.
Calm the signal. ExoFirm uses exosomes from centella asiatica, the plant behind cica creams. Exosomes are messengers that tell skin cells to repair. These are kept dry so they stay potent, then activated on your skin during treatment. They support repair and help reduce visible redness.
The pod also carries copper for collagen and elastin, gold flakes for radiance and antioxidant support, plus peptides, hyaluronic acid, and glycogen.
Four jobs. Three products. Six weeks.
Frequently Asked Questions
How long does prep actually take?
Two to four weeks for most people. Six if your skin needs real correction first, or if you have not been on much of anything. Your provider will tell you which at your consult.
You are not waiting either way. Your tone starts evening out while you count down, and most people see a difference before laser day.
What if my laser is in two weeks?
That can still work. Bring in what you are already using. If you have been consistent with a brightener, a retinoid, and daily sunscreen, you may already be prepped and we just set your stop dates. If not, we will tell you honestly whether to move the date.
I already use good skincare. Do I still need this?
Maybe not. If your routine is already suppressing pigment and supporting your barrier, we will say so and adjust your stop dates instead of selling you a protocol. Bring your products to your consult.
Does this work for every kind of laser?
Yes. Whether your laser targets pigment or resurfaces the skin, both produce heat and both trigger an inflammatory response. Prep quiets the pigment cells and strengthens the barrier, which helps in either case.
My spots got darker right after my last laser. Was that bad?
Not necessarily. Treated spots often darken and flake off over the following week. That is the pigment clearing, and it is expected.
Post-inflammatory hyperpigmentation is different. It shows up as new or spreading discoloration weeks later, often beyond the treated spots. This is exactly what we are prepping your skin to minimize.
If that is happening to you right now, come see us. Do not wait it out.
Why do the pads and my retinol stop before laser?
Both exfoliate, and we do not want to treat skin that is actively shedding. Everything active stops seven days out so your barrier is at full strength on treatment day. This part is not optional.
When can I start my products again afterward?
That depends on your laser type, the intensity we treated at, and how your skin is healing. Your provider will give you written post-care instructions before you leave. Follow those rather than the schedule on this page.
Can I still laser in the summer?
Yes. If you do, prep matters more. Summer skin has more active pigment going in. Tell us your travel and beach plans and we will build around them.
How is this different from a HydraFacial?
A HydraFacial uses suction to pull debris out. ExoFirm uses no suction at all. Instead it triggers your own circulation to bring oxygen to the skin, then infuses actives in that same window. Different mechanism, gentler experience.
Ready to Start
The Countdown is the foundation. It is how you laser safely and get the most out of whatever treatment you have booked, from MOXI and the Pico Laser Facial to full resurfacing.
